California continues to face an extremely serious drought. And this water shortage points to a deepening water crisis that is not limited to one state or even one country.
This 2-minute comedy video is part of a campaign created by the Yes Men and comedy website Funny or Die to raise awareness about the staggering amount of water used in meat production.
Did you catch that? To produce the average pound of beef, it takes 1,800 gallons of water!
Meanwhile, California’s livestock industry currently uses more water than all the homes and businesses in the state combined.
While enduring its worst drought in more than 500 years, California exports alfalfa, a thirsty crop, to other countries, like China, where it’s used as livestock feed. Today, California actually exports more than 100 billion gallons of water per year (in the form of alfalfa) so that consumers in China can eat beef.
